For many men and AMAB (Assigned Male At Birth) individuals, the first time they undergo a full crossdressing transformation—hair, makeup, and clothing—is far more than a simple costume change. It is often described as a pivotal, “threshold” moment.



Whether it’s a quiet experiment in a locked bedroom or a shared moment with a trusted friend, the experience is a complex tapestry of high-stakes emotions.

Here is a deeper look at what that first time truly feels like. 1. The Sensory Shift
Beyond the emotions, there is a physical sensation that often takes newcomers by surprise.

The Weight of Fabric: Switching from heavy denims and structured cottons to silks, nylons, or lace creates a different tactile relationship with the body.

The Silhouette Change: Seeing a different shape in the mirror—created by waist-cinching, padding, or the drape of a skirt—can cause a physical “double-take” that resets how a person perceives their own space.



2. Gender Euphoria vs. The “Proper” Feeling
While “dysphoria” (the distress caused by a gender mismatch) is often discussed, the first time dressing up usually introduces Gender Euphoria.

The “Click”: Many report a sensation of a “missing puzzle piece” finally snapping into place.

Authenticity: It isn’t necessarily about “playing a character”; for many, it’s the first time they feel they aren’t wearing a mask. As one person described it: “It was the first time I didn’t feel like I was just wearing a uniform.”



3. The Paradox of Vulnerability and Power
The emotional spectrum during this first experience is rarely a straight line. It is often a tug-of-war between two extremes:

Intense Insecurity: The “Mirror Shock.” You might focus on your shoulders being too wide, your jawline being too sharp, or your height. This can lead to a “glass house” feeling—the fear that the illusion is fragile.

Surprising Confidence: Conversely, many find that femininity allows them to express a softness or a charisma they had previously suppressed. There is a unique power in finally seeing the person you’ve only seen in your head.4. The Fear of the “Unknown Self”
It’s common to feel a wave of nervousness or even “imposter syndrome.”

Am I doing this right?
What does this mean about me?
Who is this person looking back at me?

These questions can be overwhelming. It’s important to note that these fears are a natural reaction to breaking a lifetime of social conditioning.



5. Emotional Catharsis
Don’t be surprised if the experience ends in tears. This isn’t always sadness; it’s the release of long-held tension. For years, many people hold their breath without realizing it. Seeing a feminine version of yourself can act as an exhale, letting out years of “performing” masculinity.



The Bottom Line: There is no “right” way to feel. Whether you feel like a glamorous queen, a nervous wreck, or simply a person who finally feels “correct,” that first time is a brave act of self-discovery. It’s less about the clothes themselves and more about the freedom to explore who is underneath them.

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself, your hobbies/interest &where you are from?
Lisa: “I am Lisa 25 years old crossdresser from Bavaria, Germany
I am interested in makeup, clothes, taking pictures while I’m dressed and drawing.”.



Q. How did you get started with crossdressing?
Lisa: “I started with dressing in my early puberty. My classmates told me early on in school that I had feminine features and a feminine figure with great legs. A teacher once said that I behaved more femininely than the other boys. I took it as a compliment.”

“It was no surprise that I felt magically drawn to my sister’s and mother’s wardrobe. I tried on her clothes and makeup. I felt feminine and cute.”



“I think girly clothes are definitely more beautiful than man clothes. So why not wear women’s clothes and express my feminine side. I was very happy when I moved out and was able to live out my life even more.”

“I bought my own lingerie, dresses, skirts, wigs and makeup. I was finally able to find my own style and experiment. I am very proud of where I have ended up now.”.



Q. What are the challenges you have faced as a crossdresser?
Lisa: “I always need some time to take the next steps. Always give myself plenty of time. sometimes too much. I haven’t managed to come out as a crossdresser to my friends and family yet I am very perfectionist and want to be the most feminine version of myself when dressing. In order to be perceived as a woman in public. That’s annoying sometimes.”.

Q. What are the things that you really enjoy being a crossdresser?
Lisa: “I love to improve my makeup skills and  increase my already feminine features. I like my skin to be smooth after shaving and love feeling beautiful lingerie and clothes on my skin.”



“When I put on my makeup, wear sexy lingerie and a dress I change alot in my behavior. I do everything in a super feminine way. To see my inner girl in the mirror is an amazing feeling. And being confirmed by compliments is just great.”.

Q. How often do you dress up now and tell us about your transformation/ makeover process?
Lisa: “As often as possible, of course. It’s me. it is my greatest passion. I try to do it every weekend. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work.”

“I start by removing my body and facial hair, put on something cute and comfortable, apply nail polish and start with the makeup. Sometimes it takes me two hours because everything has to be perfect.”



“Then I put on one of my wigs and style it. Now the fun begins with the outfits. Every time I try on an endless number of clothes that I’ve just bought.”.

Q. Where do you buy your clothes and makeup from?
Lisa: “I buy most of my clothes at H&M they have some cute stuff. And my Makeup at DM. Its a drugstore in Germany.”.



Q. What type of activities do you prefer to do after getting dressed?
Lisa: “I take a ton of photos and videos during dressing. Sometimes I text with other crossdressers and boys (I mean getting compliments just feels great. After I’ve decided on the perfect outfit, I like to go for a walk.”.

Q. Have you went out in public in your femme self?  If yes can you share your experience about going out in public and being dressed feminine in front of other people?
Lisa: “I really enjoy going out in public dolled up. Take a walk and enjoy being looked at. I’m always nervous when I leave the apartment and I’m excited to see what awaits me this time.”

“But the excitement dies down very quickly. So far I have only had good experiences when I was dressed in public. I was spoken to once. The man looked very surprised when he heard my voice.”



“Apparently my voice betrayed me. However, I took it as a compliment; apparently I had succeeded in my transformation.”.

Q. Any particular story or experience you would like to share about yourself and your crossdressing journey?
Lisa: “No specific story. I just feel more and more the need to express myself. Don’t just do the dressing for me. As a next step, I would like to build friendships with like-minded people, exchange ideas, meet up, and go to parties together. And have experiences like other girls.”

“So far I have only dared to introduce Lisa to a person with whom I had been in contact for a longer time. It was a great experience. He was very nice and gave me a lot of support. This should be the beginning for the self confident Lisa.



Q. Have you come out to your friends and family as a crossdresser? If yes, how hard was it for you?
Lisa: “No it’s still my secret.”.

Q. What are some of your favorite outfits/ styles?
Lisa: “The shorter and feminine the better. I like to accentuate my feminine figure and show what I have. I love close fitting dresses, skirts cute crop tops and sexy Lingerie.”

I like to combine my styles with nylons, jewelry, bags, the right high heels, sandals or boots. What can I say, I’m a girl who likes to dress nice and sexy.”.



Q. Lastly any tips or advice you would like to give to crossdressers who are just starting out?
Lisa: “Be yourself. be experimental and find what you like. Have fun and don’t let anyone talk you out of it. If it feels good, it’s the right thing. When it comes to makeup. Practice practice practice.”.

You crave to be out on the streets, but it feels like a jungle where danger lurks around every corner. It’s biblically awesome. That is, unapproachably daunting. But, if you sincerely wish to go out in public as a woman, know this: you can. It’s allowed.



BUTTERFLIES FLY
Gearing up for the outing is a cocktail of feelings – excitement and doubt, anticipation and trepidation. But, stay positive and be like a butterfly taking that first flight: nervous, yet eager to learn. You will blossom and find your courage…

Life is a choose-your-own-adventure sandbox game. You can play it any way you like. You can choose the rules to play it by. You can change the rules you play it by. You can do this whenever you like. And one of the main tests on whether a new rule is viable is whether you “get away” with it. Step outside in a skirt and you will “get away” with it. (Unless you live in some sort of conservative suck hole of which there are thankfully few in the Western World).



WOMAN IN A BILLION
The point is, if you play LifeTM in femme mode, then most people simply won’t care. There are something like FOUR BILLION women in the world. Being a woman is not a special thing.

Angst over your gender identity might matter to you to a soul-crushing degree, but it is irrelevant to everyone else.

Here’s another way to think about it. If you walk down a busy street dressed as a respectable and self-possessed woman, here’s what’ll happen:
Mostly everyone will be too preoccupied to notice you at all … but a few will.
Most of those who notice you will not pay enough … but a few will.
Most of those who pay attention to you won’t clock you … but a few will.
Most of those who clock you, won’t care … but a few will.
Most of those who care will react positively … but a few won’t.
Most of those who react negatively will keep it to themselves … but a few won’t.



THE LOSER MINORITY
Yes, there is a tiny group of people who will rant about their grievances in broad daylight, but they might be as little as 1 person in 10,000. And they are not picking on you because they have recognized you as a crossdresser, they will pick on anyone different and you, in your cute dress and heels, just happened to cross paths with them.

Understand that I am speaking from experience. I live femme and I do it openly and in broad daylight. I get heckled sometimes. And it is always from utter losers. These people have no social standing and will try to attack anyone to get some. Think of aggressive beggars, loutish teenage dropouts, boorish construction workers breaking their backs for minimum wage. They go for anyone who they think they can intimidate.



NORMALLY INTRUSIVE
Being a woman of any kind means you’re more prone to others intruding into your repose. It’s the downside of being seen as non-threatening. Female distress is the counterpoint of male chivalry. (And most men are civil and good).

If you are crossdressing in public, it is best to adhere to the same social standards that cis women adhere to. Presentation is key: look well-presented for your age, act like an adult with purpose, walk with your head up. Do normal things and normal people will treat you normally.

This often feels like an impossibility though. It feels easier to go out alone at night, somewhere quiet and deserted. However, you are MUCH more vulnerable when you dress a woman but don’t do things a cis woman would normally do. As a rule, cis women do not dress sexy and walk around alone after dark in seemingly deserted places.



BE RESPECTABLE, BE ACCEPTABLE
So, simply know this. When you present and comport yourself as a respectable woman, nearly all men will extend chivalrous behavior towards you and nearly all women will extend to you a provisional membership in The Sisterhood.

When this happens, you can safely let the world be new to you. A world experienced in the feminine way. You will find that while it’s genuinely scary to STEP OUT, it’s not scary to STAY OUT. When you realize this, being femme in public stops being biblically awesome and becomes awesome in the more usual sense!

Want to hear something else blunt? The fantasy or dream you have of what life as a woman is like is not accurate. Until you begin spending time as a woman in the world – acquiring real life experience – all you have is theory.



The learning only begins when you step out the door and start doing. You already know this. As with everything, reality and consequence are far more inventive than imagination.

Gradually becoming
Further, there is no immediate switch from one gender to the other. (Other than the lucky few who can present plausibly femme or masc just by how they dress and carry themseLves). Instead of flipping from one to the other, you must grow from one way of being in the world to another way.

Your true gender identity gradually accumulates around the life experience you gather once you start living in a way that honours it. It is likely that your character won’t even change that much. You’ll be different, but you’ll stay you.



It starts awkward. It stays awkward
Now, as you’ll remember, growing up is a messy business. Just like your masc persona went through stages of growth, so too must your feminine persona. And I really mean MUST.

Your feminine persona must progress through childhood, girlhood, adolescence and teenagerhood to become a young woman. And you’re going to have to do it in the body of an adult man. Then, depending on how many birthdays you’ve had, you will have to keep growing until you become an adult woman with tastes and behaviours that match your current level of maturity.



For ciswomen, the stages don’t stop at adulthood though. They have to deal with menopause. We do not. Lucky us! Anyway…

So, if you are 45 years old when you transition, you ARE NOT transitioning into an 18-year-old. You will, however, pass through a stage when you will think, feel and act like an 18-year-old. That is okay and natural, so long as you keep growing up to 19, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, etc. You might desperately want to be a fun and carefree 18-year-old chick, but it’s not going to happen unless you ARE actually 18.

For damn sure you don’t want to be a 45-year-old stuck with the mindset of an 18-year-old. To be an ageing human who refuses the gifts of wisdom and maturity and who seeks to stay stunted in a youthful mode, that is always sad whoever it happens to. It is a recipe for ever-increasing anguish. Denying reality always makes that reality worse.



Denial doesn’t work
I don’t talk about it much, but this is an appropriate time. I had a friend called Nicci Tristran – aka Rubber Nicci. You may know of her. You can still find her stuff online. She was gorgeous, a trans supermodel in latex.

We worked on projects, did photoshoots together and I was a regular behind the scenes at her nightclub. She died at 49. While it was not the cause of her death, in her final years she was increasingly unhappy and frustrated with her efforts to make the mature face in the mirror match the ideal she had of a perfect plastic dolly. For decades, she had been very VERY good at presenting herself as that dolly for so long.



Further out of touch
The mental anguish of ageing out of her aesthetic was like a creeping morose panic. It drained her life of joy. Being the perfect plastic dolly was her escape hatch, yet squeezing through it was getting harder and harder. The inability to find the woman in the mirror acceptable was not the cause of her death, but her last years were miserable because of it. Poor Nicci.

The reason you see early-journey transwomen dressing wildly outside their biological age group is that their feminine identity has not caught up to their level of maturity.



The middle-aged girl
Think of a 60-year-old who has spent their entire life in extreme repression of their feminine side. Isn’t it fair enough that they dress (and feel) like a young girl – a Bo Peep, with curls and bows – right at the start of their journey to womanhood? When they begin to accept that their feminine side is the more valid side of their selfhood, doesn’t that self deserve some breathing room?

This person may be 60 years old in terms of their male side, but that female side has zero life experience and has the “character” of a toddler. For this 60-year-old to be at peace though, that feminine side must grow up. The 60-year-old man must become a 60-year-old woman.



A woman among women
And as she grows, her aesthetic matures too. She acquires confidence, taste and elegance. And, most crucially, dignity. She’ll look back on her earlier phases with the same amused cringing that ciswomen have of their younger days. The outward aesthetic is important to pay attention to. It is the clearest outward sign of where you are up to in growing into your womanhood.

When you transition, you are joining the society of women and learning to get by among this group which is now “your people”. They are very likely to welcome you with open arms, but they are still mature adults. And just like the society of adult men has no respect for the manboy, the society of adult women has no time for an adult who acts like a little girl.



Silly slutty phase – goodbye to all that
Me, I am over 40. I admit, I too dress too young for my age. But the gap has come down considerably from what I used to be. You should have seen me 10 years ago, wearing outfits made of transparent hot pink plastic or my fixation with plaid mini skirts. I was approaching 30 and dressing like I was approaching high school.

Now I largely dress like my gal pals and coworkers. Most of them are 4 or 6 years younger than I am, but they are my “set” and I respect what they have to teach me.



I could cringe about my silly slutty phases, but I have realized that these were necessary stages of immaturity. I had to do all that to get where I am.

I don’t know where you are in your progression, but look at your age and then look at ciswomen who today are the same age as you: do you resemble them in taste, elegance, confidence and dignity? You’re going to have to if you want to lead a life among “your people”.

Linda Bailey and Phil Walsh who now live together in Coventry, West Midlands met through TikTok when Linda came across Phil’s crossdressing videos and they started engaging on each other’s videos. After hitting it off the couple started dating and Phil later proposed to Linda.



Lina, who works in clinical diagnostics says she supports her crossdressing partner to the fullest and loves him for who he is. Linda adds that it doesn’t bother her when people assume Phil is a homosexual or trans because he likes to cross-dress.

Linda admits that Phil looks amazing as a woman and that he gets asked out a lot by men. They have encountered many experiences where men come up to them to sit with them thinking both of them are women.



Phil, who is a field technician says that he has been cross-dressing for almost 10 years and mentioned that he was always fond of feminine clothes and find them very comfortable. He joined TikTok and started posting many videos of him cross-dressing in full makeover with a wig and makeup.

Phil was really happy that he didn’t need to hide anything from the beginning from Linda and now they love getting dressed together or putting on matching pajamas at home.

The couple share wigs and make-up except for clothes because they are different sizes. Phil loves to cross-dress whenever he has time. Linda admits that Phil is better at doing make-up than her and gets asked out a lot by men because he looks amazing as a woman.



Linda claims ‘He’s just a man who cross-dresses. Any negativity doesn’t bother us. We’re both confident in who we are and that’s what matters.”.

Phil says it took him a while to work out where he fitted and know where his place was. He adds that a whole new world has been opened for him now and he says he’s not hurting anyone by crossdressing.

Phil adds ‘When I’m dressed up I feel happy and I’ve realized it’s part of me and just something I do. I want others to know they are not alone and to just be themselves.’

Self acceptance :
Below are notes I used to tell my partner. I found writing everything down in bullets and starting at the beginning helped give context. Double breaks were for me to pause.

I waited until we were relaxed and we were in a safe space to be vulnerable. Put a candle on and some chill music, just sitting looking at each other on the couch.

•  I want to talk about this cross dressing side of me. This is about me and acceptance of this side of me, being honest about my self and the journey of discovery. I cried writing this and I hope it comes across the right way.
•  If at any point this becomes too much we can stop, I know this might be a lot and I’ve tried to craft the best way to tell you this I can think of.
•  I’ve been wanting to tell you this ever since we met. I think about telling you all the time. It’s not just you, I’ve been wanting to tell myself this side of me is ok for my entire life. This has been a part of me that I’ve been ashamed of – hidden from everyone.

• Started when I was about 6, would try to convince others in pre-school day care to wear dresses with me. I remember running around day care in a dress, I don’t even remember what it looked like, I just remember wanting it to be normal and realizing it’s not.
• Growing up I would have this fascination with girl clothes, like cute dresses, platform shoes, makeup.
• I had no real desire to be girly full time though, like I didn’t want Barbies or anything I just really liked how expressive and pretty female clothing was, like I just wanted to wear that.

• Stole lots of clothes from drama department in school. I remember this fairy-tale costume I stayed late after class and shoved it into my bag when no one was looking. I rushed home, heart racing and couldn’t wait to put it on.
• Would steal clothes from like target or buy clothes on eBay, hide them under my bed.
• I would wear and stretch out my mum’s shoes, they were 3 sizes too small for me but I squeezed in, she obviously knew someone was stretching out her shoes in hindsight.
• Mum/dad would find these crossdressing treasure troves and throw them away every few years, but we’d never talk about it so it just taught me to get better at better at hiding.

• Discovered browsing the internet this is called a sissy fetish, getting off on crossdressing – usually dressing like a little girl – super frilly dress, lots of pink – which I enjoy but do lean towards sexier stuff now.
• Would sometimes consider transitioning but never felt like I wanted to be a full-time girl, I enjoy being male – and I still feel that way, there’s elements where I want to be more feminine but not in a permanent state.
• This feeling would come and go and every cycle I would buy some clothes, wear them for a bit, get over it and throw them away.
• The term for this is purging and is really common I found out recently.
• I did this while we were together, every couple of years or so, Would hide stuff in the garage or whatever.
• You probably found hints of it over the years, hiding it is difficult and annoying.
• It would come and go in waves but would always come back.

• I’ve been wanting to tell you about this sooner but I just don’t know how, it felt incredibly shameful. it’s such a hard thing to come to grips with, it’s sexually charged so you go through these shame spirals where it’s hard to know how much of a core person it is to you.
• I’ve told you little bits and pieces, like even telling you I like to crossdress was really hard and your responses have been nothing but supportive and I love you so much for that, buying me those clothes and heels honestly meant so much to me, thank you for being so patient while I figured this out.

• It’s all just an internal struggle of acceptance and nothing to do with you.
• After I stopped dating others, I had no interest in seeing other people and wanted to explore this side of myself more, I’ve always been very confused by this so I was like f*ck it, I have money, let’s explore it more, let’s see how far the rabbit hole goes.
• A big turning point was one night deciding to post something online I filmed of myself at like 2am, about July 2020.
• The catalyst for this was I was chatting on Tumblr to a random person and showed them a screenshot and they wouldn’t believe It was me, they called me a scammer and took a lot of convincing for them to believe that was me in the photo – I was confused at first then like, oh shit I guess I’m really attractive.

• The response from posting was pretty crazy, I added some tags like #sissy #crossdress not expecting much but it went viral on twitter – 1000 likes and 40 comments or something the next day I woke up – most comments were very lovely and supportive.
• I posted again and again every week or so, each one getting the same amount of engagement. I got to like 10k followers on twitter in a few weeks before getting shadow banned. It’s been growing slowly since then but I don’t really care.

• People would tell me comments how beautiful I am, how I’m like an inspiration to them on their journey. It kind of triggered this deep longing for this side of me to be noticed and accepted for this part of myself I’ve been really ashamed of.
• Over the last year or so I’ve grown a social following of about 60k combined across instagram, twitter and tiktok, posting images/videos of me dressing up – trying different styles and exploring this feminine side of myself.
• I got reposted by dollskills because I tagged an outfit of theirs.

• I feel like berlin was such a turning point in this side of me, I’ve never felt so free to be whoever I wanted to be, and desired by so many, and just accepted really.
• I made the leap after the girl dressed me up to show her my instagram and she was so excited, it was really scary to bridge that gap between my male self and this other side of me.

• I’ve been chatting to a pro Dom recently, to just like be a sounding board for what I’ve been going through, she’s very sweet and kind. After Berlin I pulled the trigger to meet where she created a safe space without any judgement. We did a little dress up and photo session which was really fun.

• I don’t know what this all means but I feel like I’m finally enjoying and accepting I have this side of me where I can be creative and this hot girl that can show off.
